It's leveling for me. I agree hoarding is annoying, but I'm not involved enough in the PK game to greatly care.

Leveling is boring because the current system forces you to play it safe. If you go after creatures strong enough to create major risk, your average experience per hour drops like a stone. As much as I hate leveling, I'd gladly see the experience rate halved if SK quit punishing players for having heroic characters.

Worried that XP comes too quickly if we can go after much higher-level NPCs? Consider that the problem goes away by Mentor-Master, because you grow out of those opportunities. And who cares if someone makes Expert fast? (Not counting the happy player of the Expert. :) )

I thought the real topic was "What deters you from SK?" If you wanted to just talk about hoarding, then your introduction and poll are both faulty. Furthermore, talking about problems without addressing solutions to those problems is pointless.

I haven't had the time or the heart for SK lately, RL's keeping me otherwise occupied.

If hoarding is that much of a problem, here's a solution I've toyed with: if you're wearing something, keep the weight of the object the same. If you're not actually using it, double the weight of it. The closer you hold something, the less the weight matters. The more you're carrying, the more awkward, the more the weight is felt. Just a thought.

I actually enjoy leveling for the times I need an SK fix but don't have time to get into even quasi-serious RP. Or for the lonely hours when the who list is in single digits and I'm feeling too introvertive to send random tells looking for interactions. Leveling is easy. At time monotonous, but that's part of the coding attempt against a grinding style of gaming.

Sick of leveling? Go RP. It can happen when you're not the biggest bad boy on the block. Let your character grow from his young and stupid days into his GM days of leetness. He'll be more impressive that way. Leveling may be insipid, but I won't complain until I can come up with a viable improvement to make it both require some sort of work so that high levels are an achievement, and also not be equally boring.

Before the current RL onslaught, my hours were dwindling not because of hording or leveling but the mindset of minimal RP that seems to fill the characters who spend maximum time in the game. Things like this:

All I know is sk is more fun when you play with friends you know. This game is really all about pk and good armor/weapons.
That and the tactic of "The imps won't change the game to my whim so I will forget the RP of this game and flog a coding advantage to death so they will see that I am ultimately right!" Cue mustache twirling and maniacal cackle. The true awesomeness of SK comes when its slogan is realized. Roleplay and tactics, and lookit which comes first!

Oh, and as for colors, that's what zmud coding is for. If you don't have the know-how, toss a question up on the legal scripts thread. :P

That took entirely too much time to type, but that's the mini-rant that's been building in me lately.

Disease: Hoarding

What deters you from this game the most? That is the question I decided to post in the poll. And I believe it is a quite valid one for those who decide to take frequent sabbaticals from SK. Though what is the reason that you all decide to take these breaks? What makes Shattered Kingdoms so unbearable? In my opinion a major detriment to this MUD is hoarders. I hope to explain why, and perhaps we can think of a solution.

What?: It has come to my attention in a log on a different site that hoarding was in fact a disease that needs to be cured. I've played this game for quite a bit and have seen my fair share of hoarders but like I said once I read this log I thought "Why has nothing been done to end hoarding?" What is the mission statement for the staff of Shattered Kingdoms? Dulrik, if you would like to have your MUD flourish I believe the best thing to do is to end hoarding. As a former adamant player nothing got me more riled up then one character holding practically every scripted item in SK. I know it's poor form to call out these said "hoarders" even though we all know who they are.

Why is hoarding such a detriment? Imagine you are a new player, you come across Shattered Kingdoms and you very much enjoy it a lot so you play vehemently. You get to be quite a competent player yet you can never progress onto the upper echelon because the "elite players" keep to themselves and hoard items your character could put to good use.

How can one cure this disease? I think the only cure is to purge the hoarders, why not punish those who decide to hold the entire game in their cloaks? It makes Shattered Kingdoms a whole lot less fun to play.

I am well aware that this thread will turn into whines from those who do hoard, and many vociferous cries about how this is not a problem and then nothing will ever be done. Though can you blame me for trying?

Your the disease!
LEAVE the ESKAY NOAW!!!

What sort of solution do you propose? I'm sure any solutions proposed would not be to your liking. Then why did I post this topic you ask? I just wish to point out what is the matter with SK so we can solve it an move on.

More color in SK is not that problem though, I assure you.

PK logs. A bunch of you act like [REDACTED] [REDACTED] with roid rage in those discussions. Too much focus on it. If everyone put in a quarter of as much effort into playing the game as you all do bitching at each other, it would be a hell of a lot more fun. Stop pking, then going afk or logging off to post a pk log then argue about it inanely for three days. Thank you. :p
