Personally, I have it aliased that if I type "se," "sw," "nw," or "ne" in a sentence, it transforms the abbreviation into the full word.
My script for this is still available in the "legal zmud scripts" topic on the gameplay forum. No idea on the signet ring problem, short of taking off your damned rings.

I never type open, look, close, or unlock. All my directional commands are in my keypad. If I hit ctrl-keypad direction the commands unlock (direction);open (direction);look (direction) is sent. Alt-keypad direction does look (direction). Ctrl-alt-keypad direction does close (direction);lock (direction). I have all the directions spelled out fully so as not to confuse with objects. I make keypad-5 look. Ctrl-keypad-5 is list;train. Alt-keypad-5 is exits. I've used the keypad-. for info for a long time. Keypad-0 is stand. Ctrl-keypad-0 is land;dismount;sleep. Alt-keypad-0 is affects. Keypad - is up and + is down. I usually make / into junk all.corpse;get all.coin. I leave * to be something class based. This makes movement pretty quick for me. I do have a ton of scripts in my Cmud.

I never type directions at all. The world just knows where I need to be and moves itself under my feet because it knows better than not to.

The SE in the room is SElf. You're trying to unlock your SElf.

Time to pull my own Grep.

This level is filled with doors. These doors lead to many places. Hidden places. But one door is special. One door leads to the source.

I've had the same thing happen with various lowbie characters when trying to open the se door in the Outpost. I assumed there was a problem with the "unlock se" command in general.

Rather inefficient, but it works. Copy and paste that into your zMud command line and your are good to go.

I don't know anything about scripts and I use MUSHclient. Guess it's typing out "southeast" for me.
