I'll buy that a more law-abiding version of unprincipled merits a different alignment. I just would never have associated that viewpoint with the help file for dogmatic.

Maybe the help file emphasizes a love of order a little too much? For example: "Dogmatic characters hold the rule of law and order in the highest esteem" doesn't really fit with the mercenary spirit described. Following rules because of general trust of authority and personal convenience is different than being a zealot for rules.

Perhaps "hold discipline and obedience in high esteem" would get the idea across better?

I think you are reading too much into my prior statement. Performing dangerous duties for a paycheck is not at all the same thing as being a mercenary. One definition of mercenary is to work as a soldier for foreigners. As far as I'm aware, there should not be any tribunal members that have not become citizens of their kingdom.

But another definition of mercenary is someone who is willing to be bribed. A dogmatic character would never do that. They dutifully hold to their agreements. If you tortured a dogmatic soldier for vital information, they might relent and give it up to avoid being killed (self-sacrifice is the domain of principled characters), but they would never do it willingly or change allegiance simply for money.

True. But it's also not following rules because one really values rules. I really like the way your example shows gray-aura selfishness. What you described are people who are law-abiding because their life works better that way. And sure, that includes intrinsic respect for authority.

However, the dogmatic help file describes someone who makes a principle out of hierarchy and law. (At least that's how I read it.) That's more like some crossbreed of principled/aberrant than like your example.
