Oh I misread this small snippet, I thought the said enemy was forced into combat round 1 but that was just a midnight guard.

I still agree though he should have been considered to be in combat.

I'm pretty sure the only real "bug" here is that you're attacking a linkdead character. All bets are off in that situation.

Unlike you, my previous statement wasn't trying to provoke an attack or criticize you, even if the fact that a person with whom you were in combat two minutes prior is now standing still and performing zero actions doesn't trigger anything for you. I was simply pointing out that linkdead characters behave differently. Notice how he doesn't actually attack even when he's under direct damage and holding a reaching weapon, so he could clearly hit the aggressor?

Two other things, aside from his being linkdead, might contribute to the problem. First, his group leader (e.g., me) was not actually in combat. Second, he has auto assist turned off.

You're wrong on both counts. This behavior is not unique to link dead characters. I see this exact "bug" quite frequently when I am doing PvE, too. The game is simply inaccurate and slow at interpreting when a character or monster is fighting.

Hence, my suggestion that circle should be contingent upon a character having a racing pulse instead of being flagged as fighting.

Here is another log snippet from PvE, with circle bugging out again. This is really frustrating - please change circle to work all the time. Something in the code is not registering targets as fighting.

The Floating Stairway
  This staircase seems to wind ever upwards into the heights of this tower,
spiralling gracefully between several landings.  The steps are carved out of
alabaster marble and quite flat, exhuding a mystical, intense white glow.
Closer inspection reveals that they aren't in fact connected with each other
but hover in mid-air, kept there through magical means.  Several identical
doors on each landing lead past stone archways and deeper into the tower.
The peripheral view from the stairway is quite dizzying, one's gaze lost in
the tower's white brilliance.

Fhaeron is here, fighting Avril.
Scarab is here, fighting Avril.
Morzatu (a drab male centaur) is here, fighting Fhaeron.

I don't see why Circle shouldn't just always work. It's really just a weaker backstab, so if you use it wrongly instead of backstab, it's just a slightly-stronger-than-normal strike.

Actually, if circle stab worked all the time, it would be extremely powerful: As things stand there are ways to keep your own pulse racing to avoid backstab, and circle stab is an extremely powerful instant attack, capable of doing upwards of 33% damage to a sanc'ed Max HP human barbarian.

If you want to catch someone offguard, you have to use backstab: Circling around someone's formation requires them to either be not paying attention (IE: Pulse not racing), or be distracted by their group being in combat.

If anything, circle being able to also be used like backstab (AKA whenever someone's pulse isn't racing) would be okay, but anything more would be extremely powerful. What does need to happen is for the group combat code to be fixed.
